Political Polarization and the NRA

  • Republicans tell us nothing can prevent a crazy person from mowing down scores of people with an assault rifle. Trump says “hundreds” of people would have died with stricter gun control laws in Texas.
  • In 2016, anti-gun control NRA PACs contributed nearly $1.1 million to Congressional candidates. The NRA contributed to 237 Republican Party members of Congress (House and Senate) and  5 Democratic Party members of Congress. Less than 1% of the contributions went to Democrats.
  • It was not always this way with the NRA. As recently as 2010, 27% of the NRA contributions went to Democrats. NRA contributions to member of Congress haved declined significantly since the 1990s, with he bulk of the decline occurring on the Demoratic side of the aisle.
